Okey class, today we'll learn the history of rabbit. It's quite interesting that domestic rabbit today with various colour and breeds actually develop from a European wild, greyish rabbit. Formerly, the European wild rabbit was a popular game animal and source of food in many countries as it today.
It's amazing that various and colorful breeds of rabbit today is developed from this wild rabbit
Domestic rabbits were introduced onto other islands by travellers with the aim of providing a food source. The rabbit has high reproduction rate which contribute to their success became established in the wild in most places where they were introduced.
English angora has been breed for its fur.
The various breeds of rabbit we see today is from selective breeding and domestication of the rabbit that has been carried out for over 1,000 years. They've been raised commercially for meat, skins and wool as well as being widely used in laboratories.
From wild to cute lop rabbit.
As in 1995, it's estimated that 61 domesticated rabbit breeds and 531 varieties recognized in the United Kingdom, with more being constantly produced by selective breeding. However, they're all derived from the same species of European wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus).
After I discovered that hybrid animal is impossible to create, it has lead me to new discovery. If you can't produce new species, you still have a chance to recreate it by using new technology- computer. By editing photo of different animals, you'll come out with a new species. In reality it just a fantasy.

?????? Any opinion of its name?
If you accidentally found one of these species in the wild, tell me!
Long ago I've found a man showed his weird cat which he claimed the cat was a mix breed between cat and rabbit. The cat has a normal appearance like any other cat, but the difference is she hops like a rabbit because her hind leg is really similar with the one that bunny has. I'm very curious to know how he do that, is't by simple cross breed between rabbit and cat or by finding some animal experts to genetically manipulate genes to produce a hybrid animal?
Later I found out that there's no such thing exist. A cabbit is only a myth that has started as early as 1845 where writer Joseph Train of Castle Douglas claim that Manx cats were the product of matings between female cats and buck rabbits. When people saw a tailless cat with longer hind legs, they quickly made a speculation that one of its parents was a rabbit. But after understanding the genetics theory, the assumption is totally wrong!
Closely related species can hybridize such as horses and donkeys that produce mules but cats and rabbits are too distantly related. Rabbits are vegetarian and cats are carnivores, how can they breed together?
DO CABBIT EXIST?
Yes they're exist, but not from hybrid of rabbit and cat but because of the genes defects. A cabbit just a name given to a cat that has dysplasia. Dysplasia is a term use in pathology to refer an abnormality of development. The cabbit may exist if a spontaneous mutation occur which affect the spine, tail and legs or the kittens develop abnormally in the womb and have a non-hereditary birth defect.

Can science manipulate the genes to produce new species of animal?
Rabbit can be trained to do various tricks, but to me the most fascinating trick is their own nature, jumping.Watch this amazing trick during rabbit show jumping event.
Listen carefully, the owner use clicking sound to train the rabbit.
For bunny owners, watching a bunny can be fascinating yet observe her alone doing bunny thing is not enough. Anyone that watch cute bunny hopping around can't resist to hold the bunny, cuddle and play with her. However, pick up a bunny can be very dangerous, not only to the owner but also the bunny herself. Bunny hate to be lift up from the ground and she can be really scared if she's not used to it.
As always, I like to stress the difference between bunny and other pets (cat and dog). You cannot pick up your bunny by the way you always do to your cat or dog. I can tell you that cat and dog really loves being cuddle by their owner and they don't have problems at all being lift up from the ground for a long period of time. They just love it! On the other hand, bunny can be really nervous being away from a ground, even if the owner frequently do so.
DON'T YOU EVER MAKE HER CRY!
Learn how to handle a bunny properly is very important for the sake of the rabbit and also for the handler's well being. Panic rabbit will kick ferociously with their hind legs and scratch with their claw, or even worse biting the owner. It will result in severe injury to the owner as well as the rabbit.
Rabbit has a lightweight skeleton and their bones are easily fractured compared to other animals. By struggle violently, the rabbit may damage its spine, resulting paralysed in the hind legs and to make things worse it may die to the heart failure.
Steps by steps to pick her up.
1. Pet your bunny gently. Like other pets, petting a bunny can make her relax and comfortable.
2. Take your bunny into your lap slowly. If your bunny struggle, then just let her doing so. Frequently doing it will make her use to the idea. You can also lure her with a treat.
3. Hold your bunny slowly. Lift the rabbit with your hand under his chest while supporting her hind legs with the other hand. Make her facing to your body, place your hand on the rabbit's back and always remember to support her hind legs.
4. Be patient. Always remember, you must win your rabbit's heart. Don't be rush, and your rabbit will use to it as the time passed.
Not all people use to keep a rabbit as a pet. Some people see a rabbit as a delicious food, a cute animal, a hard to care, or a shy and boring creature. It's nothing wrong with that assumption, instead it's true!
This rabbit is peeerrrrfect for the meat!
They see a rabbit as a food when someone said rabbit meat is nutritious and tasty. A breed such as Florida White can be a successful breed for meet production. Some information about rabbit meat:
1. Cholesterol level in rabbit meat is much more lower compare to turkey, chicken, beef and pork.
2. Percentage of fat in rabbit is lower compare to turkey, beef, chicken and pork.
3. Rabbit is highest in protein %.
4.Rabbit meat is all white meat.
5. Rabbit meat can cure asthma disease.
Rabbit as a cute animal? Most people keep bunny because she is cute rather than establish a long term relationship with her.
Some people who have owned bunny said that rabbit is hard to care compare to dog and cat. This can be either true or wrong.
True when the owner has a little information about bunny. Wrong when the owner has the passion to keep rabbits, learn about them and understand their behavior. in other word, don't ever compare bunny with a cat and dog!
Cat and dog are predator and they're born to win your heart. It's because they need you to feed and to play with them. They have their own way to attract you and it's one of their special ability as a predator animal that make them as a good pet.
Rabbit is totally different. Rabbits are prey animals, and they've fear natural instinct that protect her in the wild.
You must win your rabbit's heart, rather than wait your rabbit to win your heart. Once you've gain her trust and love, she will bond very strongly with you.
Rabbit is naturally shy and quiet creature. People that think bunny is such a boring animal may not know her true color. This type of people only keep a rabbit in the cage all the time, rather than let her roam freely in the house with other pet. Once taken the bunny indoor, you'll surprisingly amazed on how playful of bunny can be. Of course with step by step lesson to get the bunny familiar with your house and to teach her behave properly.
Keep a bunny in the cage everyday will make him sad.
We can communicate with any animals, IF, we understand their language and they understand our language.
Simply keeping a pet with little information about them will result in difficulty later on, not only to the owner but also to the pet.
In order to communicate with your bunny and establish a long term relationship with her, you must understand how she behave and what did the behavior means.
FEAR
Rabbits can be easily frighten because they are prey animal. You can see that bunny always be alert from a predator all the time. Thus, when you see your rabbit is afraid, talk to her in a soft voice and move slowly to get near her. This will help your rabbit recognize you from friend or foe.
PEACE
Bunny has a long ear which is design to detect even the slightest sound. For this reason, try to create a peaceful environment while communicating with your rabbit. Avoid any loud sound in your rabbit area to prevent her from stress which can easily make your rabbit fall sick.
PATIENT
Rabbit owners should pose this quality, being patient with your rabbit. If your rabbit run from you, be patient to get near her. If your rabbit kick or bite you, find the reason why she doing so. If your rabbit didn't get what lesson you taught to her, teach her back with patient. Gradually, a more mature and less troublesome adult bunny will emerge in front of you.
BODY LANGUAGE
This is the most crucial part to learn, understand the body language of your bunny! If you can understand her body language, then you'll know what she's telling you.
These are some of rabbit's body languages
If your rabbit lie flat on the ground- she needs to be petted
Thumping- It's a danger signal. Maybe they've heard something odd and could be potentially harmful. It also could mean an expression of displeasure.
Her nose wiggle moderately relax-she is paying attention to something, the faster the wiggling the more agitated she's
Her nose suddenly stop wiggling-the interest level beyond the highest wiggle rate. Or could be what she observe looks confuse
Binky (jumping excitedly in the air)-Your rabbit is very happy.
Periscoping-she is trying to figure out something and to get a better view of surrounding.
Rabbit licks you-a sign of affectionate. Shows that you could be a trusted companion.
Bunny suddenly turn back-you've annoyed her. Usually bunny will step away from you, turn her back but looks over it shoulder to make sure you're noticed
Waggling ears-when you notice your bunny face you, and waggle its ears, she wants to interact with you
Most people always think that rabbit is dirty and has a strong bad smell.
The TRUTH is rabbits like to CLEAN themselves by licking their fur and paws, just like cat and dog. Once they're matured and being spayed or neutered, they will less likely to soil their living area. Rabbit can also be taught to use litter box. A good type of litter can prevent from bad odor without changing it for a week.
People always keep rabbit in a cage, thinking that she like to sleep all the time and don't need much more space.
The TRUTH is rabbits DON'T like to stay all the time in their cage, they like freedom and they love to explore their surrounding. Rabbits DO like more space if they're kept in cage or hutch. They need an exercise everyday, that's important for their intestines to work well. Rabbit that lack of movement will more likely to be affected by various of diseases, just like us, human.
People always think that small rabbit like dwarf breed and young rabbit don't require much more spaces, as their body is small.
The TRUTH is small rabbits DO need more spaces because they're very active and energetic than the bigger one. You can see the joy of your rabbit running and hoping around, especially the younger one. Just like small kid that is very active and sometimes hard to control.
People always said that bunny can be left alone for a day, or a week as long as the owner left enough food for their bunny.
The TRUTH is pet bunny need a daily monitoring from their owner. Some disease, such as diarrhea can be life threatening for bunny. Pet bunny can die quickly if no specific treatment apply to their disease.
Besides, if you left your rabbit in your house, BEWARE that she could be a boss in the house. Just like this bunny that eat almost anything in the refrigerator while her owner left for a vacation.
Well, I just kidding....don't take it serious lol.
Most of us think rabbit is cute, well maybe very cute. Rabbits look cute and adorable because of the way they look like, also their natural behavior contribute to their cuteness (try to look what your rabbit likes to do and you'll fall in love with her). But, what happen if someday you found out that your rabbit looks like this...
or this....
would you consider to keep it? Or to say she is really cute? I guess you might have a nightmare thinking of your rabbit.
In German, a teacher sue her student only because the student drew a picture of bunny on the blackboard. I don't know how the student drew it, but the teacher was awfully scared because she got rabbit phobia. Weird isn't? Read the full report here.

Teacher with rabbit phobia to sue 14-year-old for drawing bunny.
A teacher with a phobia over rabbits is suing a 14-year-old pupil for compensation after she drew a bunny on the blackboard.
The teacher, from Vechta, Germany, says she was traumatised by the drawing, and claims the girl knew it would terrify her.She had transferred to the school where a pupil from her former school had just become a pupil and told her new friends about the teacher's fear of rabbits.
"We did it for fun and out of curiosity", one of the girls told a court, adding, "We wanted to see if she would really freak out."
School officials removed her from the class and now the teacher is seeking compensation for her terror and her loss of earnings, her lawyer Manfred Bormann told the court.
The case continues.
Latest report....

A German court has thrown out the case of a schoolteacher against a pupil who had allegedly been tormenting her by scrawling pictures of rabbits on the blackboard.
The teacher claimed that the pupil was abusing her by playing on her fear of rabbits.
The court in Vechta, northern Germany declined to hear the complaint of the teacher, who was seeking an injunction against the 14-year-old girl to stop her from making the drawings or claiming the plaintiff had a paralysing fear of rabbits.
"The plaintiff now has a month to appeal the verdict," said Mechthild Beckermann, the court's chief judge
Witnesses had told the judge that the teacher ran sobbing out of the classroom when she saw the image of a rabbit on the blackboard.
The girl denied making the drawings.
Two years ago at another school, the teacher took a pupil to court and reached a settlement in which the teenager agreed never again to claim that the plaintiff "freaked out" when she saw a rabbit or heard the word.
Sumatran rabbit (Nesolagus netscheri) is one of the world's rarest rabbit ever live. This extremely rabbit is listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and was thought to be extinct until it was accidentally photographed in the late 1990s. Even now it is considered the world’s rarest rabbit and is sorely endangered of becoming completely extinct as the population is so low. There aren’t any current estimations as to how many of them are living in the wild.
The rabbit accidentally hopped in front of a camera trap planted by Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) scientists in an Indonesian rain forest. The photos, taken in Bukit Barisan National Park, are only the third images of the Sumatran striped rabbit ever recorded; the rabbit was last photographed there in 2000.
Before the first photo was taken in 1998, the foot-long Sumatran striped rabbit had not been seen alive since 1972. Only 15 specimens exist in museums, all dating from before 1929. The rabbit is only known to inhabit the forested, mountainous spine of its island namesake. It is listed by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) lists as Critically Endangered.
"This rabbit is so poorly known that any proof of its continued existence at all is great news and confirms the conservation importance of Sumatra's forests," said Colin Poole, director of WCS's Asia Program.
Until recently, the Sumatran striped rabbit was believed to be the sole representative of its genus. In 1999, however, scientists discovered another striped rabbit in the Annamite Mountains, which straddle Lao PDR and Vietnam. Eventhough the two species resemble each other, genetic samples revealed them to be closely related but distinct, having diverged about 8 million years ago.
Was there any special significance to the striped rabbit's Easter-time appearance? The question remains a mystery, but scientists reported that no colored eggs or baskets were found at the study site.
Interesting Fact: The Sumatran Rabbit is so rare and well hidden that the local people don’t even have a name for it in their own language and don’t even realize that it exists.
I wish scientist could catch and breed the rabbits before they totally extinct!
There's a weird story of animal behaviour that I've just come across. Read this.
Six kittens abandoned by their mum have found an unlikely replacement - a pet rabbit. The tiny kittens were left all alone after their mum decided she couldn't be bothered feeding them. They were taken in by veterinary nurse Melanie Humble, who thought her own cat would mother them, but instead they're being cared for by her rabbit, 'Summer'.
Now, they've fallen in love with their surrogate mum and refuse to leave her alone. Melanie, 29, from Aberdeen, Scotland said, 'It's amazing to see, for some reason they just took to the rabbit instantly and thought she was their mum.
They started climbing all over her and were looking to get milk from her. She just sat there and let them do it. Now they follow her everywhere. They can't bear to be without her. They're all so lovely together.'
