Rabbit Disease: Snuffles

Assalamualaikum wbt

Snuffles is a respiratory tract problem which is similar to the common cold in man. This disease is highly contagious and can become worse if left untreated. My first rabbit, Aoi, died because of this disease. At first I did some research about rabbit snuffles when I notice Aoi had a runny nose. Then I came across of one rabbit owner that said his rabbit also had a snuffle. He just isolate the infected rabbit, place it in warm place and soon the rabbit will recover itself.

Well I try to follow his advice but I noticed that Aoi's condition is worsening from day to day. At last I decided to bring Aoi to vet since I saw her become hard to breath. From snuffles it leads to pneumonia which made Aoi gasping for air. But I'm too late! That evening when I'm just about to take Aoi to the vet, I saw her lying breathless in the cage. She's dead. I kept blaming myself for her death. If I take her to the vet early she would be alive and never end her life in such a terrible condition. It's such a painful lesson to me.

What is the cause?
It can be caused by different factors but the most common one is infection with the bacteria Pasteurella multocida. There're different strain of this gram negative bacteria and depend on the strain the signs can be either mild to severe. Rabbits can be easily infected by this bacteria when they're stressed or has suppressed immune system.

What are the signs of snuffles ?
The infected rabbit will develop a watery discharge followed by sneezing and then thick whitish to yellowish nasal discharge. In some severe cases the rabbit will develop pneumonia or bacteremia (a bacteria enter the bloodstream).

How to treat?
Bring the rabbit to the vet is the best you can do. Usually the treatment is by giving the infected rabbit an antibiotics for 14-30 days. If the infection goes for days or weeks without treatment, this disease will become chronic and very difficult to eliminate.

How to prevent?
Before buying a rabbit, ensure that the rabbit is free from any infection, especially runny nose. Observe all rabbits on location and make sure snuffles is not present. However, a healthy appearance rabbit can also develop signs of sickness later on if she's stressed.

Reducing stress is crucial to prevent a rabbit become infected. Common causes of stress in rabbits are:
-improper housing
-long journey
-chill condition
-improper diet
-overcrowd
-aggression from other rabbits

Rabbit owner should be aware of the signs of this disease and seek veterinary attention at the first sign of illness.

Beware, I'm watching you!

My Girlfriend

Assalamualaikum wbt

She's beautiful than any other women i met.

I've fall in love ever since the first time I saw her face.

My heart is pounding fast and I can't barely say anything when she's staring at me.

Her black eyes paralyzed me, her small hands grip me and later her cute tiny teeth bite me and then I realized it's not a dream!

So I said to the man " I want her!"

Yeaayyy....finally I've a girlfriend that can accompany me whenever I go and whatever I do.

Meet my cute girlfriend, Lulu

Oooppsss....sorry, not this Lulu in Final Fantasy.

Ok, this is her, Lulu. She's trying to figure out how to type a word using the keyboard

I'm still in bonding process with her, though she's not too wild

To gain Lulu's trust is hard, but i must be patient no matter how long it takes

She's cuter while asleep

A scenery behind the apartment, this time I'm not alone watching this beautiful scenery because I'm with Lulu

P.s. To whom that never know or see this animal, it's a sugar glider native from Australia and New Guinea. I'm still a normal human that like to keep a pet, so don't misunderstood me to really fall in love with animal, ok!

Lilac- It has a dense silky fur evenly coloured throughout in a pinkish dove shade, and of course they've lilac to lavender coloration.

Satin- A genetic mutation found first in a litter of Havana, the Satin is named because of its soft, shiny coat. They are a commercial type rabbit, with one of the best meat to bone ratios. The satin is a medium size rabbit that weighs about 9 pounds.

Living Fossil Rabbit- The Amami

Assalamualaikum wbt

The Amami Rabbit, also known as the Ryukyu Rabbit, is found only on the Japanese islands. They live on two Japanese islands which is Amami Oshima and Tokuna Shimam, in the Ryukyu Archipelago south of the island of Kyushu.

Beach at Amami Oshima

The Amami Rabbit is a living remnant of ancient rabbits and is often referred to as a "living fossil". The Amami Rabbit is so unique and has been isolated from other rabbit species for so long, that they are scarcely even related. The Amami Rabbit has dark fur, short rounded ears, and no tail. It is nocturnal and dwells deep in forests.
The Amami Rabbit is threatened with extinction, with only about 3,000 rabbits believed to remain on the islands. They were overhunted in the 19th century and today they are faced with further pressure from development. Today they're list as endangered species which is soon become totally extinct if no one breed them.

Rabbits Everywhere

Assalamualaikum wbt

Being a rabbit owner is not always a happy moment.

This is a brief history of my rabbit (that I had and still own it)

Her name is Aoi (means blue) because of her beautiful blue eyes. She is my 1st rabbit I bought while studying in the university. She died because of pneumonia (snuffle).
Breed: Mix Angora

This is the second rabbit I bought to accompany Aoi. His name is Sora which means sky. He's lucky because Aoi's disease didn't affect him although they're kept together in a cage.
Breed: Mix Lion Lop

No name. She die because of diarrhea at the age of less than 8 weeks. It's a heartbreaking because I only kept her less than 2 weeks after I bought her at the pet shop.
Breed: Woody Toy

My sister give her name Mimi. I love her so much but for some reason I'd find a new owner to take care of her for some time. Soon I will take her back :)

Latest news, the new owner said she had give birth to 3 cute babies.

The bad news is all 3 had died :(

Breed: Teddy bear (but I believe she's Lion Head)

No name. He is responsible for Mimi's pregnancies. Give to the new owner.
Breed: Teddy bear (But I believe he's angora)

Her name is Pinky. This is the easiest rabbit to care that I had ever own. She accompany me while I'm alone in Langkawi :)

Breed: Hmmm......toy rabbit.....probably...

Rabbit 101 Part 2

Assalamualaikum wbt

Belgian Hare- Despite its name, the Belgian hare is actually a rabbit, not a hare. However, its appearance is similar to hare which is long legs and long ears.

Britannia Petite- The Britannia Petite is said originated from small wild rabbits and is known for having a wild temperament. They're one of the most unique rabbits in the Standard of Perfection, which are known for their very distinctive poses.

Californian- This rabbit looks like a Siamese cat with its white coat and dark brown tipped ears, nose, feet and tail. The Californian was initially bred from crosses between Chinchilla, Himalayan, and New Zealand rabbits in the 1920s, with the intent of creating a better commercial meat rabbit.

Enderby Island- The Enderby Island Rabbit is a rare breed derived from a small population of rabbits of uncertain origin isolated on a sub-Antarctic island in New Zealand's Auckland Islands group for 130 years. It's silver-grey in color, with a dark slate-blue undercoat, and dark, sometimes black, ears, nose and tail.

Hotot- The Hotot was developed in Hotot-en-Auge. It's a large rabbit with a white coat and black rings around its eyes.

p.s. Lately I felt a little bit tired trying to prepare my research proposal and don't really have a good time to surf the internet and read your blog (yesss...you who're reading and commenting on my blog) since the connection is still sucks. By the way, I'm trying my best to read all the post since the last day I read, especially the informative one. For all who read my post, follow and commenting on this blog, thank you for supporting  me and rabbit in the web. Wish you all Happy New Year 2011 :)

Animal Pictures Pt 2

Assalamualaikum wbt

When I sit alone I remember some of my friends that were teased by animals name, such as mole because he has a teeth that looks like a mole, Shiro (the name of Shin Chan's dog which literally means white in Japanese) because his skin is white and hippo because he is fat.

I don't know who start calling it first, but those names become their nick name for the whole 6 semesters in university, and sometimes I don't really remember their true name. However they don't get mad, it's just a joke at first and they accept the nickname gradually. Sometimes I also see an animals characteristics in people around me. When I see a girl with too much makeup it reminds me of peacock. When I see someone who is so stubborn, it reminds me a mules.

Roy Feinson said that the fundamental aspects of animal personalities can be summarized with the four Fs:
Feeding, Fighting, Fleeing and Sex.

Feeding techniques translate into the career that its corresponding human personality would choose. Bird personalities, for example, prefer jobs that provide a great deal of freedom, while sheep personalities flourish under the direction of a strong dog personality. Bear personas have a need to maintain control of their environment and chafe under the direction of a boss.

Fighting is equivalent to the way in which a person controls his or her environment. Carnivorous personalities are assertive and adventurous, while herbivorous personalities tend to be passive and cautious.

Fleeing is how people protect themselves from each other. Herd animal personalities find refuge in the company of friends and family, while a mouse personality keeps a low profile to avoid danger.

Sex describes the ways we interact with the opposite sex. From the brutal strength display of the wild elk to the seductive display of the peacock, all creatures exert control over their reproductive choices. Some animal species are monogamous while others have a variety of mates. An animal's mating habits translate directly into the way that people conduct their sexual relationships. Beaver personalities mate for life, while tiger personalities are solitary and rarely monogamous.
